A KITTY STORY

We all have misconceptions about cats. After watching the cats at my sister's place I could have sworn that they were not misplaced. They are stealthy, they sniff around all over the kitchen. They even drink up the milk from a closed container if you are not around!!! They shed their hair where ever they go and in general they are a nuisance.

But then Goru walked in one day. She was not our cat, she was the neighbour's cat. In the beginning, she just walked in sniffed and jumped on to the windows and went away quietly. This kept the pigeons waiting to fly in, on tenterhooks, and the crows screamed their heads off. I for one rushed into the kitchen to close up all the vessels and keep them out of her each. It is difficult to keep things away from cats. They jump around and leap over obstacles. She had two broods and soon her visits became longer and more frequent. She was trying to get away from being bothered by her kitties!!! The kitties were playful and they kept disturbing her and her sleep was being compromised!!!

One fine day she decided to make the rocking chair her PLACE. No one could sit on it when she came in,, because she gave a funny look and just stood there till you got off and gave way. She would come in, sleep for hours, wake up, stretch yawn and then just go to the door and utter a small little meow. It meant open the door, I need to go out. If the door was a little ajar, she would open it herself and let herself in!!!
There were times when we would open the door and she would just turn around and back on to the chair.

Slowly the chair was not enough. She needed more space and sometimes it would be the computer chair and sometimes, on a hot summer day, the floor. Now of course she is plonked either on the sofa, purring away when we pat her, or early mornings she just walks on to the bed.

Our misconceptions were truly unfounded. She never ever goes into the kitchen to smell the food. She feeds on whiskas and Amul Taaza . That too only at the neighbour's place. She looks with disdain at anything else served as food. She never messes up and is always quiet, leaving the place when there are guests or when we sit at the dinner table.Of course she sheds a lot and I have armed myself with a lint remover to clean up after she leaves. She cuddles up and likes to be rubbed . When she sleeps she almost is like a human being, rolling turning and tossing. She keeps herself so clean , licking away vigorously.

After observing her I have found that cats come in as they please and go out when they want to. You cannot dictate to them where they can sit or sleep and they look at you with such pleading eyes ( just like puss in boots in SHREK), that you have to give into them. But she is a therapy of sorts. She lets you forget all the madness of life, as you just rub her soft furry body and hear her purr in contentment.

And yes I dont mind that cat walking in through the door now, she is just a part of the family. Only thing she does not eat here, just sleeps. She has kept the pesky pigeons away and the crows are wary of stepping even on to the balcony. Thanks Goru.
