Some years back the sparrows just disappeared. We used to see them on the fans, in small spaces in the house. Sometimes chirping on the trees, sometimes squabbling away for the small morsels left behind by the crows. It was a noisy scene and sometimes they left the balcony in shambles with all the droppings, and other debris they brought with them.
In the rainy season, when it just poured and poured, they would just sit on the grill all in a line. It seemed as if they were watching the raindrops falling from the sky. They would just fluff their wings and feathers and shake away the water.
Then one season, they just reduced in numbers. The numbers were just falling ( fall of the sparrow?). I started missing these tiny creatures that brightened up the day with their gregarious nature.
Then all of a sudden this morning there was this great chirp-cheep-cheep on my kitchen window. Lo and behold there were the sparrows again. They were fighting and if I am not mistaken there was this one adult feeding one of its kids on the window! One even flew into the kitchen.
It was the return of the sparrow and my heart just soared at the sight of the birds . I am now waiting to hear them every morning and watch them quarrelling away for the morsels.
You may think me foolish and funny ,but then the sparrows are an important part of our ecology, aren't they?
